DIY Speakers

As with most projects, this also started with some unused parts, some free time and an itch to create something. In this case I had an in-wall speaker lying around, that I did not need, and figured, why dont I create a box speaker out of it.

Disassembly

So, I stared by taking apart the various trim pieces from the main speaker body. What next? Was kind of forming the plan as I went along. Watched a few youtube videos to get some ideas. And then headed to Lowes to pick up some wood (2 planks), paint, sand paper and a jig saw.

Getting things ready

Back at home, I first traced out the inside shape of the speaker on to the wood, then drilled holes at the corners, so I could use the jig saw to cut and remove the inside. With the other plank I decided to divide it right down the middle, and it would be the sides of the speaker. Measured twice, cut once and mocked it up to see what it looked like. Hmm, Impressive. It looks like it is headed in the right direction.

Assembly

Next step is to nail the pieces, seal the inside with silicone and outside and finally prep and paint the outside.

Finishing touches

Bit of Serendipity here! I layered a nice think coat of paint on the wood, realized it might be a bit too much, so i took the sander and tried to take some of it out. Noticed, I accidentally created a nice distressed look on the speaker. So instead of messing around with it, I did the same with the other speaker. So instead of having two shiny speaker shells, I now have 2 distressed finished speaker shells. Hmm. I actually like it. So marching on… Now to put the foam insulation on the inside and then the wire for the rear and the final step of attaching the speakers in the front.

Well, what do you think?

Oh and I forgot to mention, these are now the crown jewell of my living room sound system. Paired with a Denon AVR 4000 (yes the same receiver from my earlier post), they sound really nice. Love them. Hard work rewarded 🙂
