Wiring my house with Cat 5e

If you are going to have a lot of data moving around in your house, it is not very practical to rely on WiFi. You are much better hard wiring your home network. Most techie houses i suspect would typically have around 5-10 devices that can connect wirelessly, when you account for all the smart phones, tablets laptops, tv’s etc.

Also, this allows you to get your hands dirty and do some physical work before you get to the nerdy portion of the project 🙂

I have made a basic plan for the layout of the cabling in the house and ordered a bunch of things:

  1. 8 port gigabit router
  2. 250 ft of cat 5e cables
  3. RJ45  ports
  4. RJ45 plugs
  5. wire stripper
  6. punchdown tool
  7. wall plates

I am going to go with the 568B based cable layout.
